Serviced apartments and extended stay

You cannot send a guest who stays a month a code every morning. Guest Wi-Fi that remembers the device, issues a coupon matched to the length of stay and allows several devices per unit.

  • Coupon for the whole stay
  • 3 devices per unit
  • No daily SMS
  • 5 GB/day fair use

Not a hotel, more like home

An extended-stay guest does not behave like a hotel guest. They open a laptop and work, watch a series in the evening, have family over at the weekend. Seeing the portal again every day wears them down and sends them to the phone to ask reception for the Wi-Fi password.

But it is not home either. When a guest leaves, their access should close, and the next arrival should not inherit the same quota. In a building where everyone uses one modem password, nobody knows who connected when, and one unit can eat the line at everyone else's expense.

The answer is a network that understands the length of stay: access that starts on arrival day and ends on departure day, a few devices per unit, and a fair-use quota.

Law 5651 for accommodation providers

A serviced apartment, guesthouse or extended-stay property that opens internet access to its guests is a mass-use provider under Law 5651. The law expects internal IP allocation records to be kept, protected with a timestamp and retained for 2 years. A guest may stay 30 days, but a record is created for each of those days; the box does this every day on its own, and nobody writes anything by hand.

Setting up in a serviced apartment building

  1. 1

The box sits behind the existing modem and switch, at the exit of the guest VLAN; the modem stays, and no extra licence is needed on the access points.

  2. 2

The guest SSID is the same in every unit and gathered on one VLAN; the reception computer, cameras and payment terminal stay on a separate VLAN.

  3. 3

Client isolation is switched on at the access points, so devices in neighbouring units cannot see each other.

  4. 4

Smart TVs in the units connect through a MAC exemption and never see the portal.

  5. 5

On arrival, reception generates a coupon valid for the length of the stay; a short-stay guest logs in with an SMS code instead.

Sign-in method

  • Coupon
  • Remembered device
  • SMS code

On arrival the guest receives a coupon valid for the length of stay: 30 days for a 30-day guest. With device memory, their phone sees the portal once every 7 days, and you can extend that period. For short stays, an SMS code is enough. Our recommended 'long stay' template: 15/5 Mbps, 24-hour session, 3 devices, 5 GB per day. Departure is handled by the coupon simply expiring.

Ready-made plan templates

Speed, session and device count are set per plan on the box, independent of the access point brand. The values below are our own lab recommendations and can be changed in the panel.

Example scenario

Example scenario: apartments let by the month

Problem
The units share one modem password. Departed guests still know it. One unit downloads constantly and clogs the line. Nobody knows who connected when.
Solution
Guest access points were moved to one VLAN and connected to the box. Reception now generates a coupon valid for the length of stay at every arrival. The 'long stay' template was applied: 3 devices, 5 GB per day, 24-hour session, 7-day device memory. TVs went onto the MAC exemption list.
Outcome
Guests enter their coupon for the stay and receive no daily SMS. When the stay ends the coupon becomes invalid on its own. The quota stops one unit from consuming the line. Each day's records are chained and timestamped.

Frequently asked

Does a 30-day guest receive an SMS every day?

No. You give the guest a coupon valid for the length of their stay; with device memory on as well, their phone does not see the portal for 7 days, then they enter the same coupon once more. You can keep the SMS code open only for short-stay guests or those who prefer not to use a coupon.

How is access closed when the guest leaves?

The coupon's validity is matched to the stay; when it expires, the coupon and the devices tied to it fall back to the portal. The coupon of a guest leaving early is cancelled from the panel. There is no link to a booking system; control rests entirely on the coupon period.

How many devices can connect in one unit?

You set the device count per plan; the 'long stay' template suggests 3. For guests staying with family, a separate plan and coupon with a higher device count can be defined. The limit travels with the coupon, so reception has nothing extra to configure.

What if one unit consumes the whole line?

The daily quota and speed limit prevent that: we suggest 15/5 Mbps and 5 GB per day. A guest who has used up the quota waits for the end of the day or picks up a coupon on a higher plan from reception. The limits are set in one place on the box, independent of the access point brand.

Can foreign guests use a coupon?

Yes, a coupon needs no phone number, which makes it the most practical route. If SMS is preferred, codes go to foreign numbers too and international messages can be routed to a separate provider. Both logins are written to the same record chain.
